A history on dogs & Cats

Did you know that our pets genetically can live to be 20 years old, but the current average is 13-15? While many factors help the longevity of life such as environment, health care, and social atmosphere — nutrition is one of the most important contributing factors.

Dogs and cats have been our companions for thousands of years. An estimated 30 percent of American households have at least one cat. About 40 percent of American households have at least one dog. That's a lot of pet owners with dogs and cats! With having a pet companion it is our responsibility to supply the best nutrition for their foundation to a long life.

Have you ever wondered how commercial dog or cat food started?

The commercial pet food industry started in 1860 with James Spratt's invention of the first biscuit made for pets in London, England. Spratt was inspired by observing sailors throwing hardtack (a biscuit or cracker) to the dogs and cats at the docks. His biscuits were very popular and other companies soon began making their own versions.

It was after World War 1, in the 1930's that canned pet food was featured. Dog food cans primarily were made from horse meat and cat food made from fish caught on the coast. Many labels were dubbed with the title "dog and cat food" but little was known of the nutritional requirements.

Interestingly, pet food was developed around World War II. It consisted of left-over grains that were rejected for human consumption. Very quickly, people noticed that grains alone were not providing adequate nutrition, so protein was added. The source being meat unfit for human consumption; dead, diseased, dying, disabled, or drugged animals met that criteria.

During World War 2, when metal was rationed, pet food was classified as "non-essential". Canned pet food was not not produced nor available at that time. The production then shifted to dry foods for pets. By 1946, dry food represented 85% of the total market. Convenience was the biggest marketing point with dry foods.

Many of the ingredients in our pet food today causes a shorter life span due to additives which cause stress on your pets kidney and liver functions. Among these ingredients, are wheat, corn, and soy which are major allergens to pets. By-products such as animal heads, duck bills, fish chum, poultry feet, bones, as well as diseased & contaminated slaughterhouse meat are allowed to be included in these other pet foods.

Chemicals such as BHA and BHT, which harm the dog livers and kidneys, are some of the many known carcinogens. Additionally, ingredients like Ethoxyquin, which is a stabilizing agent for rubber, are also known additives. The purpose of adding these chemicals are to provide an extended shelf life for months and even possibly years!
